MOOlangi Tovve – Radish Curry

It is raining, the weather is gloomy, everyone is falling sick. At such time all you need is steaming hot, basic, light on tummy curries with steamed rice and ghee.

Tovve, is a kannada term used for a simple, basic, humble dal. Something that isn’t heavy and is light on the tummy. Tovve is made with variety of veggies. Today I have made Moolangi Tovve (Radish Curry).

Ingredients

3 nos – Raddish, peeled and sliced (5mm thick)

1/2 cup – Moong dal

1 tsp – turmeric powder

3 nos – Green chilly

1 tsp – Grated giner

2 tbsp – Freshly grated coconut

For tempering

1 tbsp – Ghee

1 tsp – Mustard seeds

2 no – Dried red chillies

1 pinch – Asafoetida

Chopped coriander for garnishing

Lemon wedges

Method

. Wash the dal well. In a pressure cooker add dal, raddish slices, turmeric powder, slit green chillies and 1.5 cups of water, and pressure cook it till dal is cooked (I usually cook it till the cooker lets out three whistles)

. Once the cooker is cooled, open the lid.

. In a deep pan, heat the ghee. Add asafoetida and mustard seeds to it. Let it crackle and then add red chillies and let it crisp up.

. To this add the cooked dal, grated ginger,  salt to taste and 1.5 cups of water. Let it boil till the dal gets slightly thick.

. Add chopped coriander, grated coconut.

. Serve on hot rice with a dollop of ghee and a generous squeeze of lemon.

* . Moong dal cooks quickly compared to other dals. So make sure you do not over cook it, or else it will be too mushy.

. You can replace the raddish with , french beans, palak, noolkol, cabbage, ridge gourd.

Daal and curry are the hardest subjects to shoot – they are like super model(simi’s words). But you’ve nailed it 🙂 You’ve started steam photography too :)) So well done.
